Whatever happened to walking to school?
My mother loves sending me little articles, pictures and whatnot along with any letter's she sends me. The most recent of these I have scanned an posted above. I really think this fits in the suburban mindset. I can just picture a neighborhood, with the garages in front of the house. The car leaves with the kids in the car, and comes back with the kids in the car -- but you never actually see the kids. I also think this has to do with reducing a carbon footprint and improving the quality of life by not driving to school/work.

This is a great article! =) Thanks! My brother and sister and I used to ride the cheese wagon, but then, we lived on a highway.... and a good distance from the school...
ReplyDeleteAs I jogged by Childs Elementary School today with my dog I noticed a sign on their message board that declared that October 6 was "walk to school" day. I think they get it. With the wave of school consolidation in Indiana in the 70's, many community schools were closed in favor of mega schools in the middle of nowhere, thus making walking to school virtually impossible for 99% of those attending. Growing up, I was able to walk to my elementary, middle and high school (all in the same building). I'm not sure many kids could do that today. It is a community design issue.
