"What is an Ecological Footprint?" from Sustainable Reader pg 289

According to the read an ecological footprint analysis is "an accounting tool that enables us to estimate the resource consumption and waster assimilation requirements of a defined human population or economy in terms of a corresponding productive land area."

I loved the question "what would happen if a glass bubble was placed over a any city." I is kind of morbid but it really accentuates the fact that cities can not sustain themselves -- they are utterly dependent upon outside resources. The second question, 'how big would the bubble need to be to include all needed resources' is really  just asking 'how big is the ecological footprint?'

Basically, if everyone on the planet were to live as the average American, we would have used up the Earth's resources a long time ago. By putting a value or a 'footprint' on an individual's life style, it is much easier to provide comparisons and then incentives for reducing ones consumption of natural resources.
