What is the greenhouse effect?
The greenhouse effect is when gases in the atmosphere trap heat that is trying to reflect back into space.
What role do oceans play in climate change?
Oceans absorb gases such as CO2 and convert it to calcium carbonate which is dissolved in the ocean. In other words, oceans can offset some greenhouses gases but only to a certain point.
Scientists have calculated that the atmosphere before the Industrial Revolution contained about 280 parts per million of carbon dioxide. What is the current level? What is the “safe” level?
The current level is 360 ppm, according to McKibben, but I have personally heard that we are now closer to 390 ppm. The safe level seems to be between 0.035-0.055 %. It is difficult to give a safe level because a little bit of carbon dioxide is needed to keep the earth from freezing but too much could boil the earth.
What common Indiana fuel produces the most carbon dioxide?
Coal consumption seems to be the number one driver of carbon dioxide fluxes
How might what we eat affect climate change?
Choosing to eat locally would reduce the need to import food over long distances and would therefore decrease the amount of carbon that is released from delivery truck and planes.
