What struck you as the most important, interesting, or relevant concept you read? Why?
From McHarg’s essay, I feel the most relevant concept was that of the eight natural features and how they relate to sustainability. Those features are: surface water, floodplains, marshes, aquifer recharge areas, aquifers, steep slopes, forests and woodlands and unforested land. Currently I am taking the wetland biology course with Dr. Craft. Seeing the importance of wetlands and other natural features being brought up in a reading like this really makes what I am learning come full circle.
Are there any topics discussed that were unclear to you or you feel need further illumination?
In regards to the Daly essay, I think we should discuss the idea of upper and lower limits on wealth. I understand the argument but the idea sounds too much like government control. I think controlling things like that puts people on a very slippery slope and I think one should consider the trade-offs of implementing something like that Control of distribution is something that I think needs to come from the people not the government. In other words, for sustainability to work, the general public has to want it to work and not be forced to make it work. However, I do think that reaching a ‘stead state’ as opposed to a state of ‘growthmania’ is obtainable and I would be interested in hearing what others in the class have to say on this topic.
